Engaging with students is one of the best ways to raise awareness of the work we do with street and slum children in Kolkata. Development Education is driven by the strong belief of ‘students helping students’, whereby learning and understanding the reality of poverty inspires young people to take action for change. We consider all students from primary, secondary and third levels who are involved with our work to be Ambassadors for HOPE; reaching out to young people far less fortunate and taking real steps to a better, more fair world.

Involve your Primary School with HOPE.

The Hope Foundation encourages students of all ages to take steps to increase their levels of understanding of the unequal world we live in; to develop their sense of responsibility both for themselves, and the local, national and international communities they live in. It is vital that the younger generation are given the opportunity to become effective contributors and responsible citizens within the world they live.

Encouraging primary school-aged students to think of others and take action to help those less fortunate is a hugely beneficial experience.

Primary School children could get involved by having a bake sale or perhaps a non-uniform day, or could join HOPE supporters nationally by doing a balloon release to mark International Day for Street Children.

To get involved or for more information, please contact us.

In Kolkata, with thousands living in slums children simply don’t have access to clean water. HOPE has however implanted a project which you can read more abouthere WaterSanitation project (provide link to HOPE 7 – Water Sanitation section)

Child labour is a global issue, affecting 1 in every 7 children, which amounts to more than 200 children worldwide. Child labour can be anything from working in a factory, collecting rubbish, begging on the streets, or being forced to stay at home for domestic duties. Child labour is fuelled by poverty, and by desperation. It robs a child of their human right to a childhood. It is physically and psychologically dangerous and a very difficult cycle to break. It is thought there are up to 60 million children in India affected by child labour,

They will witness, first-hand, the work of HOPE and the extremities of life in Kolkata.

Supported throughout their time in India, students are introduced to poverty, the realities of street children and the joy of HOPE. A week-long programme is prepared for students, who spend time visiting HOPE projects, interacting with children and adolescents who are in HOPE supported projects and immersing themselves in Indian culture. Our young Ambassadors will remember the experience for the rest of their lives, and become more aware of their place in society and how they can make the world a better place by caring for people who are less well off than themselves.

Students must fundraise a substantial, yet achievable sum, which will be donated to the projects. This process teaches the students about the value of such activities as well as learning the skills to creatively raise the funds to meet targets and deadline. It is a hugely positive and life-changing experience. It gives students the opportunity to engage in experiences not available in the classroom, encourages greater independence and enhances social and cultural development.

Students and schools participating on the Immersion Programme are fully supported by The Hope Foundation, with a dedicated Group Leader, structured orientation process and advice on fundraising every step of the way. Through achieving ambitious fundraising targets, these young adults are an essential element of The Hope Foundation’s fundraising activities each year, and are directly responsible for more than half of the charity’s annual fundraising which goes directly to over 60 projects in Kolkata.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Day of HOPE ” el_id=”1466319891510-67d592e6-ebc8″]HOPE 21 - Secondary Schools - Image 7Day of HOPE is a major fundraiser on our calendar each October, where students and volunteers around the country hit the streets to raise awareness and raise funds by selling our Butlers HOPE chocolate bars with the message ‘every €2 counts’.

A large numbers of these students may have been involved with HOPE during their secondary school years, and wish to continue their support once they continue on to college.

However we also have interest from students who are coming across HOPE for the first time and are interested in our work. There are very active HOPE Societies in both University College Cork and Cork Institute of Technology. These Societies fundraise and organise social events during the college year, and are a wonderful way to make new friends and stay active in the community.

Many third level students also volunteer with HOPE in Kolkata during the summer, or as part of a college course. Of course, we welcome all students to help out with our DAY OF HOPE in October.
